| Garfield Medical Center’s Maternity Department ensures that every mother and baby receive optimal treatment in a caring and comfortable atmosphere. Highly trained, experienced physicians partner with our tenured nurses, some on staff for as many as 20 or more years, to provide comprehensive, expert care through each patient’s labor and delivery as well as during newborns first days. Our staff offers a personal touch and approach to each and every one of the approximately 325 deliveries we tend to each month: Every patient is personally cared for, exceeding expectations, and visited every day on rounds. Additionally, our multicultural, multilingual staff provides care in a variety of languages so that patients are better able to communicate their needs and understand their care, making new and expectant mothers feel most at home. Our staff speaks a range of languages such as Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, etc., and translators are also available. Tours of the maternity department are available on Saturdays and some weekdays. Lamaze and other childbirth classes are also available. For more information, please call 626-307-2054. Doctor referrals are available.
LABOR & DELIVERY We welcome mothers to a homey and comfortable environment, well-equipped with modern, state-of-the-art equipment. Four labor and delivery rooms (LDRs) are available for low-risk patients. We also have five private labor rooms as well as two rooms available for c-section procedures. All labor and delivery rooms offer mothers the comfort of private showers. Family members are able to stay with laboring mothers and up to two people are invited to attend the delivery.
POST-PARTUM & NURSERY After delivery, mothers and babies move to the post-partum unit, which offers 34 beds. Eight private rooms are available, and the rest are semi-private—all furnished to make new moms fully comfortable and to offer the highest quality of care. Mothers most often choose to keep their babies in their rooms, though the nursery is available to care for newborns should new moms need to rest. To help new moms best care for their newborns, lactation consultants are available five days a week to teach breastfeeding and baby care. Classes are in English with Spanish and Chinese translation available.
SPECIAL SERVICES Social workers are on-site daily for families with special needs. Families receive referrals for whatever type of services are required— monitors, special formulas, all medical follow-up, etc. We can also refer to CA Children Services, grief counseling, and assistance for teen pregnancies.
NICU Garfield Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) treats mothers, and infants, of high-risk conditions such as premature labor and birth; preeclampsia; placenta previa and other emergency situations. We also treat and deliver multiples and infants with infections or respiratory illnesses. Our specially trained NICU staff of over 60 sees to all facets of high-risk deliveries and newborn care, with neonatologists on staff and on-call and 24-hour anesthesiologists in house. The NICU offers on-site X-rays, ventilators, CT, MRI, lab, echocardiograms, eye exams—everything required for excellent care. Neonatal surgeries are referred elsewhere and transferred, with a specially trained team accompanying the transport. Occupational therapists are also available 7 days a week for feeding consultations, sensory problems, and hearing screenings. |
