This unit provides comprehensive pre and post-surgical care to the acutely ill patients, 14 years and older in population. Patient care, while based on established standards to ensure quality, will be individualized through the ongoing use of the nursing process. This unit has 22 licensed beds and is located on the second floor of the hospital. The average census is 18.
Types of Services Offered As part of patient care, this surgical unit provides assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of actual or potential illnesses or injuries, disease, and disorders by a collaborative team effort of physicians, nurses, and supportive staff for the restoration of each patient to optimum health.
There is a unit director assigned 5 days a week during the day, and charge nurses 7 days a week on each shift. Each shift is 12 hours in duration for RN license nurses and 8 hours in duration for non licensed personnel. The following services are provided in this unit:
- Major/minor surgical patients who require pre, post-surgical care (i.e. general, vascular, orthopedic, or gynecologic surgery)
- Oncology diseases with/without chemotherapy
- 24 hr. observation of patients who require diagnostic work-ups and medical treatment
When unit is full, post-op gynecologic patients without cancer diagnosis and clean surgical cases may overflow to postpartum Patients that require monitoring of their cardiac status
Hours of Operation: The surgical unit operates on a 24-hour basis.
