The volunteer program at Garfield Medical Center encompasses a multifaceted group of volunteers that distinguishes individuals into one of the following categories: Auxiliary, and Junior Volunteers. Volunteers are differentiated by age, responsibilities and time commitment.

Auxiliary Volunteers


This group consists of our adult volunteers who support most departments throughout the hospital in addition to running the gift shop at
Garfield Medical Center. All the proceeds from our Gift Shop go back to our community for Nursing School Scholarships or other funding and contributions.

Junior Volunteers


This group consist of our high school, college, or career building volunteers who provide support for particular departments throughout the hospital.
Garfield Medical Center recognizes the “Community Service” requirements of high schools and colleges in the San Gabriel Valley and has created the Junior Volunteer Program to provide adolescents with an opportunity to volunteer in the healthcare setting. Garfield Medical Center recognizes the importance of and embraces the opportunity to provide healthcare experience and exposure to college students with an emphasis in medicine. The goal for the Junior Volunteer Program is to complete 100 hours of service. A certificate will be provided upon completion.


Become a Volunteer

You will be joining a staff of professionals dedicated to providing high quality healthcare management to the community we serve.  The time you will be spending at the hospital gives you an opportunity to learn new skills, gain a sense of accomplishment, and derive personal fulfillment and growth while receiving the satisfaction that comes from being needed.  Additionally, you will be contributing to the happiness and well being of our patients and their families.  All of this makes you a very important person.

Below are the processes of becoming a volunteer.  Please read the detail instructions thoroughly.

 

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Garfield Medical Center.  Please read the following important information to get started! 

Age Requirement

You must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer at Garfield Medical Center, AHMC.

Step 1: Application Packet

Please obtain a volunteer application by downloading the attached PDF files from this website in the ‘Volunteer Application' tab. Please read and sign the documents provided in the application carefully upon submission.  Submit the volunteer application to the front desk lobby or mail the application to:

Step 2: Background Check

Upon acceptance to the volunteer program, all accepted volunteers over the minimum age of 16 will have a  background check conducted by GMC Human Resources.  Volunteers under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a legal parent/guardian for background check process. Background check may include criminal history (county and/or federal, driving record, employment history, educational history, and other pertinent information (foreign immigration info). Volunteers shall provide a Social Security card and California ID card in order to complete the background check. Persons without a Social Security card will not be accepted. The volunteers will be notified of acceptance into the program.  Allow 2 to 4 weeks for report.

Step 3: TB Testing Requirement

All volunteers must have ANNUAL TB tests (2) or chest x-ray if result is positive.  Please do not obtain PPD skin test for TB prior to being notified that background check is cleared.  If you have previously completed TB test within 1-year and/or chest x-ray within 2-years (with no known exposure or symptoms); please bring a copy of TB test result to orientation.

Step 4: Orientation

A mandatory orientation (take up 1-2 hours) will be conducted at Garfield Medical Center.

Step 5: Uniform

Appropriate volunteer uniform are to be purchased prior to start date.  Uniforms are $20.00 (acceptable forms of payment: cash or personal check w/ID) and are sold in the GMC Gift Shop on orientation day or at your convenience. (*Dress code will be discussed in orientation.)

Step 6: Schedule

You will be placed in a department to report to, based on your availability and department's operational hours.  If you have any changes in your schedule, you will have to notify the Director of Volunteer and the supervisor(s) in your department.  Otherwise you are expected to work according to the schedule arranged.
