Garfield has a long history of providing excellent medical care in the
San Gabriel Valley area. While we embrace a culturally diverse population
for which we serve, there are challenges when it comes to the issue of
donation of organs and tissues. Due to cultural and religious beliefs,
the majority of our patients and their families do not support donation.
We at Garfield Medical Center feel strongly about donation, understanding
that a donor can save up to eight lives and help as many as 50 people.
There is a critical shortage of available organs and tissues due to the
number of candidates outpacing the number of donors. 18 people die each
day on the organ waiting list.
Garfield established a partnership with One Legacy, an organ procurement
network agent. Due to our collaborative efforts, on October 21, One Legacy
awarded Garfield Medical Center the award for Excellence in Partnership
for the most increased donation support.
